Golfers: Speed Training Is Making You Slower

Change the game speed training is killing your speed.

Many golfers swing too fast for their own good.

 

Add speed training on top of this for a golfer that is already swinging too fast and this will end up slowing them down because it will likely lead to an injury.

 

“Swinging too fast” is common to see because many golfers don’t have the necessary strength and mobility they need to be swinging at the speeds that they are swinging at in a safe manner. It actually might seem kind of cool. I mean you’re swinging and defining nature in a way. The storing of energy and the releasing of energy like a rubber band – you’re really good at it.

 

But this is a slippery slope. The risk is quite high for injuring yourself if you fall into this category.

 

Now why does this happen? It all comes down to extreme efficiency. I see it often in professional level golfers. They have had a pattern ingrained for such a long time since they were young and their body naturally has become very efficient at storing and releasing the energy to generate the speeds that they do even if they don’t have the appropriate strength and mobility for it.

 

It may also come at no surprise that golfers who have been golfing their entire life have become extremely efficient in their golf swing in producing a good amount of club head speed. Guys and gals that have been golfing since they were young and are now in their 40s or 50s. This is generally the age when many will start to see a dip in their speed and distance, but some don’t see too big of a drop.

 

The reality is, if you’re swinging too fast for your body to handle (meaning you don’t have enough mobility and / or strength) over a prolonged period of time, you’re what I would call a “ticking time bomb” – simply meaning, an injury is waiting to happen.

 

This isn’t good. If you add on top of that the need for more speed (insert yourself here if you’re over 40, as this is often where speed starts to drop for most people), and you go grab the cool overspeed training devices … the likelihood of injury skyrockets… dislocated shoulders, injured rotator cuffs, injured labrum, herniated disc’s… it happens, and we often have to rehab this with physical therapy.

 

It doesn’t have to happen. But the truth is, very few people (10% of golfers) are appropriate for overspeed training devices / aids. If you’re interested in learning more about this, a blog will be coming out soon about this topic.
